GROWTH: November 1-30, 2008
Three New Mexico Artists Collaborate on Art Installation at the Los Alamos Public Library
Fairley Barnes, Michelle Cooke, and S.C. Thayer, three northern New Mexico artists, will collaborate on an installation entitled “Growth” at the Los Alamos Mesa Public library from November 1-30, 2008.
The work will examine the nature of growth. By creating a sculptural tree in the art gallery over the course of a month using materials such as paper, rope and wire the artists will examine the natural patterns of growth of a tree, i.e., roots, trunk, branches. Structurally, the form will mimic how a tree develops over time. The public is invited to view the work, visit the artists as they collaborate on the sculpture, to ask questions, give suggestions, and contribute ideas. The ongoing growth of the tree will be documented by photographs posted daily, as well as by drawings and studies of trees done by each artist over the course of the past year.
The opening reception is Thursday, November 6, 5-7pm.
In addition to the traditional opening reception, there will also be a closing reception and discussion upon completion of the piece on Sunday, November 30, 12 noon-2pm.
The Mesa Public Library Art Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the library. Please contact the library for hours, 505.662.8250.
